Hair Loss and Thinning: Why It Happens and How to Care for Your Hair
Noticing more hair than usual in your brush, shower or around the house can be worrying. Maybe your ponytail suddenly feels thinner, your part looks wider, or you’re noticing more hair coming out when you wash it.
Hair shedding and thinning can happen for many different reasons — and sometimes it starts weeks or even months after the event that triggered it.
Pregnancy and postpartum hormonal changes, illness, physical or emotional stress, nutritional deficiencies and certain medications can all affect the normal hair growth cycle.
Why Am I Suddenly Losing More Hair?
Our hair naturally moves through different stages of growth, rest and shedding. Sometimes a change within the body can cause more hairs than usual to move into the resting and shedding stage at around the same time.
This type of temporary excessive shedding is often known as telogen effluvium.
Some of the common triggers include pregnancy and childbirth, illness, fever or surgery, significant stress, hormonal changes, nutritional deficiencies and some medications.
Postpartum Hair Loss
Postpartum hair shedding can come as quite a shock.
During pregnancy, hormonal changes can keep more hairs in their growing phase, which is one reason many women notice their hair becoming particularly thick and full.
After giving birth, hormone levels change again and those extra hairs can begin to shed.
You may particularly notice thinning around the hairline and temples or significantly more hair coming out when washing and brushing.
During this period, being gentle with your hair is important. Looking after your scalp, avoiding excessive heat and tight hairstyles and reducing unnecessary breakage can help protect your hair while it moves through this stage.
Hair Loss After Illness
Have you been sick and then noticed your hair shedding months later?
A significant illness, fever, surgery or other physical stress on the body can sometimes disrupt the normal hair growth cycle.
One of the confusing things about this type of shedding is that it doesn’t necessarily happen straight away. There can be a delay between the original illness and when you begin noticing increased hair fall.
This is why people don’t always make the connection.
While your body recovers, concentrate on caring for your scalp and treating fragile hair gently to minimise additional breakage.
Can Medication Cause Hair Loss?
Certain medications can sometimes contribute to changes in hair growth or increased shedding.
If you’ve recently started or changed a medication and have noticed a significant difference in your hair, speak with your doctor or pharmacist.
Never stop taking prescribed medication because of hair loss without first speaking with your healthcare professional.
Haircare can’t treat an underlying medical cause of hair loss. However, products designed for thinning and fragile hair can help you care for your scalp and strengthen the hair you have while the underlying cause is being investigated.

How Long Does It Take to See a Difference?
Hair changes take time.
RPR advises that some people may notice their scalp feeling healthier and more refreshed within a few weeks, while visible improvements in hair fullness and density may become more noticeable after approximately 3–6 months of consistent use.
A great tip is to take a photo of your hairline and part every four weeks.
When you’re looking at your hair every day, gradual changes can be difficult to notice. Comparing photos over several months gives you a much better way of tracking how your hair looks over time.
Don’t Forget About Breakage
Hair shedding and hair breakage aren’t necessarily the same thing — but both can make your hair appear thinner.
If your hair is already fragile, be particularly careful with excessive heat styling, very tight ponytails or buns, aggressive brushing and unnecessary chemical stress.
Protecting fragile hair from breakage can help you retain more of your length while new hair grows.
When Should I See a Doctor About Hair Loss?
While some increased shedding can occur after pregnancy, illness or other changes in the body, unexplained hair loss shouldn’t automatically be ignored.
Speak with your GP, dermatologist or another qualified healthcare professional if your hair loss is sudden, severe, patchy, persistent or accompanied by scalp symptoms — or simply if you’re concerned about how much hair you’re losing.
They can help investigate whether factors such as medication, nutritional deficiencies, hormonal changes or another health condition may be contributing.
